Ten mistakes when cruising
It's a shame to have $ 250 - $ 2,500 in a dream cruise vacation only to encounter setbacks unnecessary and disadvantages. So, in an effort to minimize the likelihood of a stone on the way to the perfect holiday, here are some common potholes that can be avoided.
Error # 1: Do your luggage Distinctive. At the end of your cruise, your luggage will be placed in a huge room with thousands of pieces baggage, probably in an area designated based on the color of a luggage tag provided by the ship. No matter how familiar are you think is with his own baggage, it's amazing how well your luggage is mixed with the mass of the load around them. Having a quick, easy way to identify your luggage will a great relief, especially if misplaced.
BUT, it is not the main reason for your luggage stand out. You will be entering this cavernous room with a couple thousand of people, some of whom spent the night out. They will be anxious to get his bag and go and there is a pretty good chance that your vision is not so good. If your bag looks like her bag, could be a goner. And if a stranger takes your luggage can spend hours, even days, before arriving again.
Do something lasting and noticeable to the way luggage is not only recognizable to you, but we will also travel companions bleary-eyed to know that your bag is not bag. Put stickers on it, painting a day-glo run around, sew a teddy bear on the outside ... just make sure it stands out.
Error # 2: Not Investigate Shore excursions in advance. There should be no surprise that people cruising online advertising have the ability to describe every shore excursion as-in-a-lifetime opportunity once. Of course, it is not complete without a cruise shore excursions and many of them are absolutely wonderful opportunities to do things you never would do otherwise. But, be smart here. Okay get fooled into thinking that palm trees sway all day and the sand feels like silk beneath your feet. But it is a whole "as wishing ORT perfect serene afternoon on a remote beach only to realize you have 500 friends, some with young children, crowding around and hit your beach chair while vendors hawk everything from coconut shells t-shirts.
Before you commit, read some reviews, talk to people on the coast cruise excursions, ask other passengers, think a little. Most cruise ships have a "No Refund" policy on shore excursions, but do not be afraid to ask for one if your experience is really unacceptable. Better yet, know what you're getting before you go. Many (if not most) shore excursions are great and be happy you were. But covering the stump and you'll be glad have.
Error # 3: Runaway Tabs bar. Unless you specifically choose a package that includes your bar tab is not included in the "all inclusive" part of your cruise. Adding to the sting is the ubiquitous 15% gratuity is added to every purchase you make on board a ship.
Could suggest that drinking less, but that's just silly! You're on a cruise! Therefore, pay attention to the amount you drink. These drinks pretty small umbrella come in a stunning canary yellow cup will cost you about twice the price of a cocktail base. Cruise ship beverage is very costly, not need to help them out by spending more than a glass that you stash in a closet when I get home.
Cruises have a policy against bringing alcohol onboard but politics is very loosely enforced if not flaunt it. In other words, not a strap handle on a case of Budweiser and check as baggage or carry your luggage Hand-held bottles of Wild Turkey. Discreetly packaged airline bottles of alcohol or beer cans probably go unnoticed. Do not try to sponsor a fraternity party, but you can definitely help yourself a little.
You can take your own wine on board if you drink at dinner, but there will be a covered " fees ". And, you can also bring a small stash of non-alcoholic beverages (soft drinks, water, etc) without any problem. You should definitely bring some water, especially if you're cruising in warm climates.
Error # 4: Ignoring the Fury of the Gods Sun Sun treatments burns are the fourth most popular reason people visit on cruise ship nursing. (The first three are: 1) bumps and bruises, 2) indigestion, 3) dizziness). Once burned, no one else can do for you except try to relieve the pain. (My favorite treat is something called "Traumeel". Can not find at the drugstore, but most parts of the health food it has.)
If you are cruising in the winter months (November to February) you do not have such a big problem. Even when you are in the sub-tropics, and though his skin, probably has not seen the sun for several months, the sun is hitting at an angle and that makes all the difference. You still need to be careful, but has more room to maneuver.
In the spring and summer, when the sun is above, you can burn in less than an hour, especially in the afternoon. Some silly people give up the sunscreen because they want to make sure to get a tan. Not a good idea. Log basking at least 15 SPF (30 if you have not been in the sun, with additional protection on the lips). As you get closer to its end time, use less SPF. Even with a good sunscreen, your friends and colleagues still know that being exposed to the sun.
The hats are a more serious if you are in sunburn territory. Most people do not put sunscreen on his head, so that part of your body that is receiving most from the direct rays for the longest period of time remains unprotected. Visors do not protect your skull, there is some type of coverage.
Error # 5: No first aid kit. As noted above, there are several reasons that passengers end up wasting your time (and sometimes money) to visit the infirmary. It may not be able to avoid all the setbacks, but you can prepare for minor errors. Of course, all this applies double if traveling with children!
Hits and bruises. The biggest reason people visit the ship's doctor probably has something to do with the alcohol mixture, slippery surfaces, metal railings and rocking the boat. For most of his injuries, the right size band aid and a good numbing cream do the trick. A simple kit for travel or camping First aid will have what you need.
Indigestion. One of the drawbacks of having constant access to all the wonderful foods Cruise ships are famous for is that people eat. And eating. And eat some more. Unless strict disciplinarian, you can expect to consume about two or three times normal quantity of food in an average day. Add to that the constant consumption of alcohol that is a hallmark of cruise and voila! Indigestion. Take along some Alka Seltzer, Pepto Bismol and some kind of sum of antacid tablet, like Tums or Rolaids. All these are available in tablet form. Some ships, stores will have something this, but not always and if you need it in the middle of the night you're out of luck.
Dizziness. The best treatment is prevention. After get, well ... Yuck! As for the various forms of Dramamine which are now available, including pills and patches. The instructions tell you how take a long time before the waves reach you need for maximum effect. You can also get acupressure wrist bands that work really well with some people.
One of the best treatments I've ever seen for treating seasickness once it hits you is Coca-Cola and crackers - lots of both. Some people say that 7-Up works too, but I think there is something in the caffeine in Coca-Cola to help the whole process. If you feel sick, your cabin is the worst place to be less time is really the top bad. Being able to breathe fresh air and see the horizon helps to activate the sensors of the brain that calm seasickness.
Headaches. We all know that alcohol can make your head scream for mercy, but so can sun and lots of new foods. If you're not used to carbohydrates in your diet heavy Scarf up lots of cakes, ice creams or gourmet desserts, your body can cause the same symptoms as it does when too much alcohol detoxification. And if you experience shocks, cuts or sunburn a pain reliever is a good thing. Keep a supply of different types of analgesic. Depending on the reason for your pain, aspirin can not work as well as Tylenol or ibuprofen in a given circumstance. (Do I have to remind you to read the label and follow the instructions?)
Error # 6: What? No Camera? A picture is worth a thousand words. It's hard to imagine, but some people actually the trip of your dreams and do not carry a camera. Or, will have a camera, but they will not keep up with them. Do not do that. If you have a digital camera, use it, use it, use it. If you have not digital camera for spring about three or four disposable. And be sure to take the camera to the life boat drill. You'll know why when you get there.
A side bar of this thing is the camera photo-ops that has around the boat. There were dozens of them on your cruise - when you're boarding, when you're having dinner, when 're getting off the ship in the pool - sometimes it seems like someone is taking your picture every time you turn around. It is, of course, free to reject. But he I recommend you give it a shot. Yes, these photos can be ridiculous, even corny, but it can also be fun. In addition, it could only end with the best shot the cruise. Some options are simple to elegant, rivaling what you'd find in a studio. It is a great way to get a good picture of her official family room or to send his family, and there's no charge!
Error # 7: The purchase of street vendors. Wherever you go on your cruise, once you set foot approached him (addressed?) by local people trying to sell you something. I'm not talking about the shops and makeshift kiosks can be found, I'm talking about the boys in the Cuban cigar sales of their trunks, pirated CDs or a cardboard box.
Your best bet, unless you've been there and really know the outcome, ie NO fair. Regardless of how attractive the offer, just say NO. Most products are very low and quality is no way to try before you buy. I know people who bought CD cases without CD in the internal clocks that did not work, Cuban cigars purchased from the local pharmacy, "handmade" jewelry that came out gum machines, the list is endless. And this applies SIXTEEN local times if a guy tries to sell some marijuana.
In most ports scale frequented by American-based ships, the street traffic is actually illegal. You may not get into trouble, but why risk it? Save their money to the locals honest and small shops that sell watches that will pay off, it collapses in a few weeks.
Error # 8: Thinking you'll save money "in the city." One of the charming aspects of the cruise is the ritual of visiting local markets and shops. This is truly an experience fun and you can find all kinds of unique and special, but probably will not find any real bargains. There are bargains to be found, but you really need to know what you're looking for and what is true in the U.S.. Neither be cynical about it. It's all part of experience. Somehow, buying a wooden giraffe Grand Turk is better than buying the same wooden giraffe at Pier 1 Imports, even if you pay a little more. Go figure.
You can really save money by buying alcohol or snuff products, although perhaps not such a good deal as it seems at first sight. Most ports have what is called "law free" trade that means no "duty" (ie import tariffs) paid on the products and therefore are cheaper to sell in that country. The same applies to diamonds and other fine jewelry. The challenge is knowing what an item is really worth. The fact that these guys saved the import duties does not that is passing the savings to our customers. Also note that is supposed to testify at U.S. customs purchases made in a foreign country. Duty Free in Nassau does not mean tax free when you come back to the U.S.. There are certain exemptions for personal items, but if you pay some big money, it is possible you lose your savings to pay the U.S. import quotas.
So do not be greedy. Spend freely. Do some Christmas shopping. Spread your money around local economy and have fun doing it. Just remember, these guys are in the business of selling equipment to foreign tourists. They know where the money is coming from and know how to keep as much as they can.
Error # 9: Sticking around the port. Yes, the ships are safe in port but that's not what ships are built for. Most ports of call, especially when the call is for a day or so have been created to give passengers ships with a particular experience. They accomplish this by making its ports as visitor-friendly as possible. Mexico's experience obtained outside the port Cozumel is decidedly different from the experience of Mexico, on the other side of the island. Around the port, all kinds of business operations are to apply to a particular comfort area and an economy in particular.
But often, a few kilometers from the port, you can have a completely different experience. If you travel to Grand Turk For example, you can spend a relaxing afternoon in the resort atmosphere of Margarita. The beach is in good condition, although a little tight. There is a huge pool with lots of beautiful palm trees and artificial waterfalls. A beer will cost about $ 6 and a hamburger is about $ 8.
However, a short drive taxi to the center of the Old City will take you to a much more authentic. At least for now. You can stroll crowded, dusty streets, watching skinny dogs dragging feet through garbage cans and make a local beer and piece of fried chicken for about $ 3.75 in one of the local pubs. Of course, the pub would not pass inspection American food and may have to do without air conditioning. But the experience can be wonderful. You will not get the experience of being near the port.
Of course, you want to be sure that you want to be able to return to his ship before sales in order to keep this in mind. But there is a whole universe of color, sound, smell and people who do not always get to the port and well worth the trouble to find.
Error # 10: not preparing for the trip home. Sooner or later (it seems too soon), the cruise come to an end and will have to return to earth to make your own bed and cook your own food. The trip home is often a necessity and something irritating to endure as quickly as possible. But if you rush back into the reality you left behind, is something like a diver coming to the surface too quickly after a deep dive. Your mind and body will resist.
If possible, do something fun on the way home. Stay an extra night in a hotel or visit a monument historical or even a theme park. At least, stop at a nice restaurant for lunch or dinner. A quiet picnic (even with fast food) in an area Respite may be a perfectly pleasant to the halfway house.
Here are a couple of things to do to make your return less stressful and rushed.
• If you are driving, fill up with gas before heading to the port. Make sure that when you go do not have to stop until you want.
• At breakfast on the last morning, take some cakes with you, or even make an egg sandwich. If you think you bring a thermos, fill with coffee or juice for the trip home.
• Keep some bottled water in your car. Many bus companies be allowed to leave personal items when the bus arrives at the port, so include some water and a pillow.
• Find out the weather at home. Once stood trembling on climate 40 degrees off the airport in a pair of shorts and an aloha shirt. Hey, it was 85 degrees when I left Puerto Rico in the morning!
• Take next day off. If you re-port on a weekend, well. If not, schedule the time off before leaving. Or call in sick. He is soooooooo glad you did.
One last suggestion.
Keep all documents with information you have on the cruise - newsletter vessels per day, the coast Price List of the excursions, etc. When you get home, all of this file in a folder and then use if for reference material for you or for someone else the next time that a cruise is planned. And before you forget, write down all the things you wish you had thought and that you wish you had known. Make a complete list and stash the information you cruise brought back.
Happy cruising!
