Maldives end of the season
Q - Richard, who has just returned to New Zealand after another season of work in the Maldives in Hudhuranfushi. How is this season?
Richard-What I can say? It was epic .... but must be specific, this was a slow start this season, well, just a bunch of medium-sized, fun days to start. The first strong wave of the season was the week following the draft QS (early June) but remember that even when the surf is average, most customers are having the best waves of his life. That's what happens to the Maldives, as I said before, and I will say again and again, is simply the most idyllic place in the world to go surfing. Sure there are many amazing places to surf and travel, Tahiti is beautiful and sitting in the line-up is impressive but not really have time to appreciate due to the very real "fear factor" means that you're not really relaxed in their navigation. The beauty of the Maldives is that it is relatively "easy", but can get big and hollow enough to be a challenge no matter where you are. I've had kids who charge in Hawaii Lohi reached for a romantic getaway with your partner, not really expecting a lot of surfing and surf just more than I do at home and I really love ... on the other end of the scale are the boys and girls that I have not actually sailed on the reefs before they may be at a first trip abroad, who are a little nervous worried that it might be too big and heavy for them, but the ease in it, and end up having the best browsing experience of their lives ... is not just something for everyone here.
Q - So when is the best time to visit Maldives?
Richard "If this is surf season (April-November), then anytime is a good time! In September and October 2008 were practically deserted and pumping, which he called as back-to-back swells with anyone for about two months straight. Julio was good too but people were in full effect. July this year was empty and pumping and crowds on the island in Lohi were at historic lows, but September and October were very busy and the fan is not as big as the previous year. early season seems to be more variable, typically smaller, though often very glassy ... crowds tend to be lighter too .... I was not joking when I said that any time is a good time! You can get really good waves at any point of the season. When nothing booked in advance, can be a risk if it comes to the fickle moods of mother nature and climate. It is reassuring to know that the winds and storms that generate the waves we ride are seasonal patterns, so do not insist on the date only one book when you can!
Q-What advice should one take to the Maldives?
Richard-All goes! What would normally take will be fine. Whenever I pack for a day a little bigger and a board that does well when it is small and then you have everything covered. I've talked about tables in a previous blog to go to the World Surfaris blog page and check it out!
Q - Do I need a wetsuit, How's the weather?
Richard-No wetsuit! Boardies and a shirt or Rashi is all you need, but sometimes use a 2mm vest if you Wind ... but I softened up! The climate is wonderful, but the rain can and when it does, is torrential! Every season seems to be a week in which it rains almost every days. As much as I know it sucks for those who want to relax by the pool I quite like the surf in the rain - it's refreshing and keeps sunscreen. "Perfection Lohis after rain, Darryl Nice Shot! "
Q - What as is the reef? Do you need boots?
Richard "The waves break on a fairly flat reef rock bottom, but of course if you hit the bottom hard you can always cut. The reef is quite lenient Maldives compared to Indo or Tahiti and some people wear boots but not many people use, especially if you have a hangover pass and are jumping ship from the rear two times a day.
Q - Do you have to have a pass to surf?
Richard-You have to be stay on the island to navigate Hudhuranfushi Lohi. To surf any wave you have to go by boat and there are limited places on ships. The boats go twice daily, morning and afternoon. After a pass guarantees surf its place in the boat. If you do not have a pass and I would surf surf somewhere else besides that can Lohi of pay as you go, but only if the spaces are available. Surf pass holders have priority over all boats, it's a great feeling when it is pumped to the falls of others! To answer your question, you do not have to have a go surfing but I recommend buying one.
Q - Where are the ships?
Richard "We have two ships, both go through morning (9:30 am) and afternoon (3:30 pm). Typically, a boat north to the Coca-Cola / breaks chickens and a boat will go south to Sultans Honkies / / Prisons. Of course it is dependent on the conditions, but if you are in, we have it covered!
Q - What are the waves like? Does barrel as Indo?
Richard-I have spoken of the waves in my last blog so I will be brief! The waves are super fun and rippable, however, there are some days epic cannons all recesses. Coca-Cola may be the heaviest waves in the north of Male. It is a right barrel of a section within fairly heavy over shallow reefs. The chicken is the perfect left through the channel of Coca-Cola - long and fast with good barrel sections. In the other direction Lohi is Sultans of which is a super fun, right very consistent with many good sections ... Honkys is a break on the left next to Sultans, another perfect wave sports much when you are in! Across the canal the day, Prisons, a long, fine, slightly softer right, J Bay hot water is often described as! Do you find attractive? Lohi is very consistent left Hudhuranfushi. It's enough to surf every day and can be epic. It really is a wave of many faces super fun 2-3 feet and perfect glass, the lifting of foot barrels.
Q - Can you learn a href = "http://www.worldsurfaris.com"> surf in the Maldives? Beginner Are Points?
Richard "The Maldives is not really a good place to learn to surf. To be honest, you need to have a certain proficiency to navigate through any reef. Not ideal for someone who has never sailed before. However, it is the best place in the world to improve once you've learned basics. The waves can be perfect mechanical really can work in all aspects of browsing ...
Q - That term half what are the crowds like?
Richard "As in any place can be crowded, but most of the time the crowds are manageable and You can often get a session with no other boats. What we must stress is that compared with many large waves in the world, the waves in this area have a number of points off the crowd dispersed. Again, I know I've been so spoiled my perception is not necessarily reality. I surfed the best waves of my life in the Maldives with anyone other than a few lucky guests lucky ... only time .... For now though I think there are many people to the guests are saying 'wow, there is no almost no one outside! "As I say, no matter how many surfers in the water you can always get waves .... all the points are for surfing any tide so do not is a case of everyone in the surf zone the waves in a given trip before you go un-manageable ...
Q - The last time I went to Indo seemed that every professional surfer and wants to pro was there in photo shoots. It was almost impossible to get waves. Does this happen in the Maldives?
Richard "No, not really, of course, about the competition that there is a huge influx of pro and cameras, but I think they are fine for surfing with him and I really enjoy it a lot. Throughout the rest of the season hardly see any, maybe one or two boat trips or for traveling with your daughter, but is exciting and not a problem.
Q - Who have you seen in the water? Any views?
Richard-hmmm .. I think I've seen most of the guys on the QS ... All are classic Saffa ... Cansdell and Greg Davey Weare ... Shaun, Mick Campbell, Dan Ross .... They simply browse all so well ... How is Shaun Cansdell Ct is a mystery to me. In Lohi, his was one of the best, most precise, elegant surf I've ever seen. I should pad the tail, but if you see him tell him to bring it next year! Cambo Mick is a legend! It is all time, he would be talking to everyone every day - guests did not know anything about surfing, not even had seen all they wanted, full of super sociable Aussie Larrikin. He was traveling more than anyone, then hitting the cocktails, paddling and fly! Dan Ross saw a couple heats of this year, is about 6'5 ", but it was he destroying these tiny ripples Pasta Point. It was two aerosol times greater than all the others! We would surf sultans and we could see when they paddled for a heat only the foam was holding! It is humiliating to have inspiration to navigate with guys like this.
Q - Is it easy to take photos - my girlfriend is really get into surf photography - will be able my shooting sessions!?
Richard !!!!? Hmmm ... yes for sure! The cover in Lohi must be one of the easiest places to "get the vaccine "can sit there under an umbrella, sipping a cocktail and take photos all day! Just make sure you remember that holiday as well, I find spa packages seem to be a great incentive!
Q - Okay, you do so at low price? Can you just come and find Budget places to stay?
Richard said about staying in a couple of the islands, though not really recommend it. Very often, after a frustrating and fruitless time trying to fix the local boats and waves missing kids want to "do it cheap" end up trying to get to stay in the Lohi. It is also a place never want to take your lady! With the Muslim religion and law in all the local islands, which should completely cover (cannot show or shoulders above the knees) and no alcohol allowed, so do not be like a fun trip for her.
Q - How is the food at the station?
Richard "The food is pretty good, there's something for everyone. Fresh fish and salad every day, and plenty of fruit ... You can eat healthy if you wish. There are a wide variety and many desserts can be hit as hard as you want. It's a good feeling comes from the boat after the hangover in the morning, and knowing lunch is ready and waiting ....
Q - The local culture?
Richard "To be frank, the island is its own little world. A complete break from reality, however is a cultural night once a week that is great with food of Maldives and the drums and dancing after dinner. There is also the option of a day's journey through Female speedboat for a nominal fee through the season.
Q-How does the Muslim religion to stay?
Richard-Not at all, apart from not being able to bring tax-free alcohol from the office and listen to the call to prayer from the mosque of Coca-Cola and prisons. You is in a complex and almost isolated, which is neither good or bad ... as I mentioned before, the rules are very stringent for local islands, but stations do not qualify under that law.
Q - So you drink alcohol?
Richard "Of course! World Surfaris The agreement is all inclusive and can drink as much or so little beer / wine as you like without extra cost. Arvo The boat comes back to the use of beer the night almost every night! Cocktails are charged to your room and settlement until the night before leaving.
Q-Is it fair for honeymoon couples? How is the nightlife?
Richard really is an island beautiful, idyllic and a wonderful place for a honeymoon or romantic getaway. At the same time, I must stress that it is not only a honeymoon, a broad host range Hudhuranfushi .... couples, groups of kids who come every year for a surf trip boys, girls brides come in the adventure of surfing, Russian cabin crew who seem to bring a party to life. There are cocktail nights and beach parties and a local DJ ... but not like the Kuta beach in Bali!
Q-What more can be done if there are no waves?
Richard "Usually, you can go surfing every day and most surfers do, either 2 feet on the ground, 6-8 m or standard tubular Maldives - perfect 3-5 feet. However, if you happen to not surf, snorkeling and diving is incredible (it's an ideal place to get certified) and I recommend wearing a mask and fins on the boat each session "I've been in the water with literally hundreds of dolphins around me and I have had massive Manta Ray gliding claim on me. On the island, is a tennis court, gym, table tennis, volleyball (by the beach bar - great fun for Arvo beers later), squash, badminton and water sports center where you can windsurf, jet ski, wakeboard or rent a canoe to go diving further!
Q - What yoga / pilates?
Richard "We have no classes as such but on the cover of Lohi is a great place to stretch before surfing! I've had a number of people who are teachers of Yoga and sometimes organize a small group and teach a class or two if anyone's interested.
Q - Massage?
Richard "How could fail to mention the Spa! The spa is very large coconut, which offer almost all strong sports massage treatments to treatments facial and other things for the ladies who do not know much about! Seriously, it's a great set and after a good swell there's nothing like a good massage to relieve shoulder pain.
Q-Can I go fishing?
You can organize excursions for both morning and night fishing. In addition, the sailing boat captains are often very happy to travel to and from the waves, or drop a line overboard while sailing.
Q - Are the boats stay while browsing?
Richard-Yes, the boat is usually moored alongside us in the channel which is ideal if you want to take pictures! If we have split, say between Coca-Cola and chickens of the boat usually stays where I'm sailing so you can arrange pick-up. But never far away!
Q - Is it possible to have a spare table in the boat?
Richard-Yes! If large I think it's a good idea. Also, we sometimes have "a exchange session of the Board "where we get as many different boards in the boat as possible and mix up ... always fun!
Q - "The boat has a roof? Are you protected from the sun / rain.
Richard-Yes.
Q - Can my spouse girlfriend / partner come on board to observe and take pictures
Richard - Yes, there is a charge of $ 15, but well worth it!
Q - Is there Internet?
Richard - Yes, the reception is a wireless zone and also a couple of computers available. Mobile telephony is not reasonably cheap so if you need to be scheduled, so that your laptop is a good idea!
Q - Surf shop?
Richard "No, put everything you think you might need. Do not forget to bring tropical surf wax - Blue Zoggs I think is best. Saying that, as with any party surfers gather there is a large market of active boards, and often you can buy or sell a table from / to a traveling companion. I have noticed that each Once there is a large wave and broke the seals that the 6'3 round pin suddenly very valuable!
Q - Are there serious problems health?
Richard "I know I'm always making comparisons but compared to Indo Maldives is incredibly safe. The management is very strict with food and standards of hygiene in the kitchens and the water is bottled. The island has a mosquito control program and there is malaria. That said, I still bring insect repellent, but not There is none of the paranoia that malaria is felt in the bottom of Indus. The hotel has a doctor on the island, but it does much more than reading Doctoring! Sure it is, still recommend travel insurance. Another important point is that we really take care of any small cuts or scrapes reef. Even the smallest cut should be well cleaned and maintained covered to reduce the risk of infection.
Q - Is it a good place to take children?
Richard "It's a small island with water almost everywhere so it is both dangerous and a unique park. I have had many travel with their young children and enjoy the experience. It is so relaxing and apparently, there is something in the buffet is good for children ... no large shallow water snorkeling and "Nemo" and his friends are everywhere! If travel with children have a backup plan in case the weather dictates a covered activity day and make sure your children are safe with water!
Q - But the million dollar question ... .. How did you get the ideal job, and is the ideal job?
Richard-Haha! I ask this question every day of the season! To ensure that work is ideal! I'm living in a beautiful island, Maldives and you can surf every day. I wake up every day knowing I'm incredibly lucky, but I've always told us to do our own fate. In the industry of surfing and surf travel industry it really is a case that, instead what you know ... and gave me good luck!
The story goes ... .. I had been spending much time in Indonesia, I did a little work on a boat, I met some people, I met a friend of Jeff, the guy who was working in Lohi before me. He introduced us, Jeff was coming to New Zealand and he came to stay me in Raglan. The following year he spent a month in the Maldives ... kept in touch, hinted that was burned and asked me if I would be interested in take care of him if he quit! Of course I was foam! The following year I was in El Salvador and I received an e-mail basically saying I was good for go for next season ... Now I have just finished the epic second season!
Q - So that was it? N interview? No session?
Richard "Well I was trying to be brief! Look, Lohi Jeff had worked on for five years and had done a great job. I think the owner Shaun Levings (Second Surfaris) trusted his opinion, which was fortunate for me! We talked on the phone and exchanged emails, but it was difficult at first, from Sal I went straight to Indo and colleagues jumped on a boat a couple of months, so I was out of touch for long periods of time and I only hope you still had the job! In fact, I did not meet Shaun until my first day at work! We sailed together Prisons perfect and I managed not to fall on him and we have very good since then!
Q - classic mate! Finally, I spent time with you in the past year of Lohi. He always seemed so positive and amplified to surf every day. How do we were still excited for the season?
Richard-Thanks! I think is important to remember that you are working and that, even if you're surfing and tired of guests who have come are full of energy and want to surf as much as possible. I try to see through their eyes, that motivates me to make sure they are the best waves possible and enjoy a memorable trip to Hudhuranfushi.
