DESTINATION: Marin County, California

The boys and I planned a day before the right steers the Christmas holidays. Just before the East Coast Contingent arrive. We knew we were going to do our fair share of the typical tourist - which is always a pleasure. Shopping in Union Square, a trip to Napa to see the latest Coppola excesses manifested in the former Inglenook winery, and good food and drinks in abundance. But today has been the fate Marin. The only question was where.

In 26 years I lived in Marin County, I have taken hundreds of trips around the area with my husband and children. With all due respect to the suburbs of Philadelphia coming from, that only could muster a few in all the years I lived there. One could only Valley Forge many times and even visit the Amish country and scenic New Hope is stale after a dozen trips to repeat - and this meant a trip out of my county. County in fact does not mean much there.

In Marin, all. It is the bond that holds this band incredible diversity of the municipalities and unincorporated areas together. It is a very tangible feeling of membership in a extraordinary piece of land bounded by the ocean and the bay and is infused with hundreds of miles of meandering open space is of paramount importance to all residents.

Today you opt for a trip to Mount Tamalpais, the imposing mountain that is home to hundreds of trails, lakes, waterfalls and wildlife. It's cold and clear as I can do My turn left at the "2 AM" Club in Mill Valley to head up. It is the only way I know to get there, and I do not know how I know In this way, but I always come. We are treated to a promotion without obstacles - in a hot climate the narrow road is competing traffic and cyclists. We intend eating lunch on the mountain Home Inn, one of the pillars for fantastic food and all year-views. We refuse to be intimidated when my son locked the keys in the car, so eating slowly while waiting for AAA to come. large mesquite burgers and sandwiches of grilled chicken are extra delicious, like soup tomato'm still trying to replicate. We agree as we always do, we should spend the night sometime and ask the host about the rooms. It gives us some clues and explore some of the one-of-a-kind comfortable rooms until we ring our savior car is here. The inn and the rooms are so friendly as it is. We agree on the room # 1 for a future date.

Back in business, we will go to the upper parking and increased our way the summit in record time. It dawns on me that Marin County is the best place in the world, if you like eating good food and then wait to work out. I remember doing the same in the Austrian Alps - after a trip in one of the many magical towns like Kitzbuhel and St. Anton, we return to the mountain to our hostel, making a midway stop for a beer and a sausage sandwich makes your mouth water. A simple snack before dinner. I lost about five pounds after two weeks vacation. My kind of diet. My kind of holiday. Very Marin, too.

From the top of Mt. Tam you can really understand the amazing topography of Marin County - A strip of green hills and valleys between majestic bodies of water. We chose the younger sister of Tam, Mount Burdell in Novato, about 15 miles away, and our hometown, then look best known landmarks, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the Transamerica Tower in the city and rolled Cabos Marin. Westward despise Stinson Beach and decided that is our next destination.

It is a fast drive, impressive mountain down to earth as the greatest stretch of beach Marin Southern California-like. It is a mecca in the summer, but today there are only a dozen vagabonds. We run a mile in the crystalline air, chasing the seagulls. We run past a sign advertising "Shakespeare on the beach" and we plan to attend a performance next summer. Our friend is the Director of the Company Marin Shakespeare, and his frequent acting talent closer to home in a fern-covered amphitheater on the campus of a college age - but in this production beach sounds fun.

Novato decided to return to the northernmost city in Marin through the water, Highway 1, which can ultimately finishing off the coast of Oregon if it is so daring. But first, we follow a security truck marked "Sea Drift" - which have always wondered how you enter Toney enclave that lies between the ocean and scenic spit. We find all kinds of quaint beach huts as we make our way to the gatehouse, and make big plans to lease one for a week this summer.

Bolinas Lagoon We sunbathing seals at all times, past mobile horse ranches, through of Dogtown and the tiny town of Olema. Another of our favorite places to eat near the beach is the Olema Inn and talk to stop for some oysters - but we are still completely. I tell the children about filming a commercial for the Inn - and how each room is decorated with comfortable European charm to accompany your meal tasty. Spend the night somewhere else someday.

Now to Point Reyes Station, a small town west of Marin to stop at on every trip back from anyone of our favorite beaches. Today there is not much produce at Toby's Feed Barn - in summer you can stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables and other valuables produced in the country. Station House Cafe offers first class dining here, and in summer, if you do on the road through the Point Reyes National Seashore, Drakes Beach will host 'Café where fish and chips are screaming inside fresh oysters and grilled corn on the cob are outside simmering on the grill. Today, however, we are happy to comply with enormous chocolate chip cookies, hot chocolate and espresso at Cafe Reyes, hidden behind of our favorite antique shop where we met a couple of small Christmas gifts. We've been looking chili red lights I want to hang in my kitchen and a small shop has them hanging in the window. We are disappointed to learn that only have the green to the left and we all recognize this is not enough: buy more gifts instead.

We felt like we had been to several different worlds, and today is only four: mountains and beaches and numerous small towns and as usual, we just hit some of the places in Marin County offers.

I think of our exploits on the other, right in Sausalito itself. The nefarious Z Sam, a colorful character, who often had his court in the No Name Bar is still jumping and owned some of the city that once was our landlord when we owned of an athletic shoe and clothing store in front of his famous beachfront restaurant, "Zack", now the Paradise Café. Sam let me shoot some ads in the Bay Richardson in front of his establishment by a customer on the East Coast, and prestige are impressive - but what seemed to be the Riviera for them was only a few angles intelligent, easy to find in Sausalito.

My friend Tony is another likely descendant Sausalito - a transplanted musician from Chicago, sports activity a great success of women business from Sausalito base while the purchase and restoration of a waterfront resort mammoth design, cinema, office building and a restaurant. The locals always thinking about their "sample sales" along with the manufacturers of some other site nearby. It's always a pleasure too, when dozens of local artisans, some of his tenants opened their doors and show off his unusual work.

But that's for another day. We headed back to the hills Nicasio where movie mogul George Lucas has a low profile environment, technologically high-octane compounds. Said to be an illusion, but I've been behind him in the tail of the Taco Bell drive-through in Novato, and had lunch a few tables away from the Marin Brewing Company in Larkspur. My neighbor Harlan, provided it and his then girlfriend, Linda Ronstadt for glasses in optical shop in San Rafael. His sober image accurately mirrors Marin County.

We make a final stop as we move in Novato, the Marin French Cheese Company, also known as Rouge et Noir. Done at the site, you can not find better anywhere brie. truth absolute. Also camembert and Schloss. We bought six rounds with mature flavor to eat and head to our city. This city-oriented super family of about 50,000 is home to numerous leading high technology companies, but maintains a small town feel is reflected in its "old town" shops, excellent schools and park active recreation department and more. In summer, the Festival hosts Novato Art, Wine and Music. Once a small business, local, now brings in crowds everywhere. I do not know how he does it, but a musician of an insurance agent and amateur in the city, has achieved consistent great book for all musical tastes. Rookie I think is an amazing place to raise a family, work, shop and dine. It tastes like only its own as any of the places we visited today.

Again, "fate of Marin is a great success. I wonder what our next adventure. I know you mean good food, beautiful views and any other outdoor activity - on a hill, on a beach or a festival, one of the bays - by bike or on foot or by boat, with a tennis racket, a golf club or even an umbrella.
