Phuket Thailand Smiles Once More Visitors

When Fred Varnier, general manager of Resort and Spa Amanpuri in Phuket, Thailand made its round around 9 am in the morning of December 26, 2004, noticed a strange pool, large poolside. The weather had been dry for days and guests yet there was nothing in it that morning. While meditating on it, got a call from Richie, a lifeguard from Australia down the private beach Amanpuri. "I've never seen the tide is low," he said, "You better take a look." Fred's curiosity was reached as his way to the beach, where 50 people were sunbathing and watching the pristine white sands and clear waters of the bay. What he saw alarmed him. The tide was in fact so low and so far that the local boats were resting along a bit strange and precariously on her keel. I did not know where all the water was gone, but he was sure of a thing. It would have to return.

Calmly, but quickly, the beach was evacuated. If I had made the remark a day earlier, the evacuation would been progressively more difficult. On Christmas day the beach was more crowded as the Amanpuri had orchestrated a production part, focused on smaller hotel, with Santa Claus and entertainment elephant. Guests were told to leave everything and to immediately make their way down the stairs to the hotel Situated in an elegant and safely on a cliff overlooking the sea. Moments later, a wall of water surged forward, taking each deck chair and umbrella on the beach. Minutes after a second wall in the opposite direction took a gym overlooking the sea. Fifty guests Amanpuri owe their lives to an expert and a confused young lifeguard, but decisive General Manager. The pool of water before Fred had seen reinforced his decision to evacuate the beach had been the result of the earthquake, too far away for people take notice, but strong enough to move a significant amount of water of the pool at the gateway of the surrounding area.

During the weeks that followed, Amanpuri sent a convoy of trucks filled with your hotel employees to Khao Lak, old and comes from the city beach that had been a starting point for tourist boats to Similians. He was one of the most affected communities, and while the city was spared, most resorts were destroyed and many tourists and Thais were lost to fury of the ocean. Amanpuri employees, many of whom were trained in first aid and most of whom spoke other languages, were the first to help survivors in his quest to find loved ones and seek medical attention and shelter in the days ahead.

In visiting the Amanpuri on 5 October this year, would hardly be able to guess who had been so close to such destruction. The gymnasium has been reconstructed, beach chairs and umbrellas replaced, the reef and coral bordering the beach, but probably changed in an ecological and geological remains as beautiful as it was on Christmas Day. The spirit of the people Thai, and indeed all employees of all nationalities was clear to me, despite efforts to more pleasant, that being to spoil your guests who had returned to attend to their favorite hotel and spa so quickly and in such numbers that the hotel was at 93 percent occupancy at the time of my visit.

I have come at a unique moment at the beginning of Ramadan and the Chinese Buddhist Vegetarian Festival. The vegetarian festival has attracted people in record numbers, locals and tourists alike, and the town was full of local vendors vegetarian specialties. There is a party atmosphere, though the party is also very strong spiritually that the local Chinese who practice Buddhism to attend temple every day, walking miles in procession from one temple to another, some in a deep state of trance, preparation for participation in what can only be described as self-flagellation and even mutilation that marks this period of ten days. Body piercing no anesthesia are among the rituals performed.

Back to the Amanpuri hill, surrounded by a grove of coconut and isolated from the rest of the world, including the day Guests feast stir then prepare for your spa treatments, which are as relaxed as if in a trance of their own. The usual spa robes reflexology and body treatments exist, but this is not usual "spa. It was created by Zachary as a world of holistic healing with the prestigious consulting Rosamond Freeman-Attwood. Everything flows here: smooth service, the mass treatment suites with ocean backdrop, and a black granite steam room, which is more bigger than my living room in Italy. A Thai fruit-facial and a 90-minute Thai massage is a combination of European and gymnastics technique of Thailand that the centers of the body and the soul is something to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

The Aman resorts are probably the most famous in Asia and is characterized by repeat guests, "Aman-Junkies" as they are known, like me, a mere novice Aman junkie but struggle to go around saying your "in-the-know" friends and colleagues what these properties are special. So my reason for saying to you all! Apart from the normal consistency of service They love this particular location is located in a beautiful peace spectacular property with breathtaking views from almost all areas of the property. Ed Tuttle, architect and designer, has created a hotel which is a series of pavilions and villas, Maka wood (similar to teak) infused with such exquisite design of Thailand, who just want to leave the property.

However, like me, likes to take in the local landscape and culture, I recommend a boat trip to Phang Nga Bay. For yacht Amanpuri or kayak, the amazing limestone formations jutting out of the sea will leave you speechless and humbled the immense beauty of mother earth. If child is not your cup of tea Amanpuri let the staff meet your needs as they sit and enjoy the scenery.

Varnier Fred asked what message he could give my family, friends and colleagues in the United States. "Just tell them to return as soon as possible," he said, "While there have been spared destruction and loss of support Life here at the hotel, others in the area that rely so heavily on tourism to support the local economy depends on tourists have faith that this anomaly of the medium environment not get back to us in the coming centuries. Let them know that we have recovered and we're more than capable of receiving a warm smile and open heart .

I visited Khao Lak, one of the areas most affected by the tsunami. Boats washed kilometers inland sea and still precariously leaning against buildings or roadside signal absurd to focus on ocean zoning setbacks, or the formulation of emergency drills. We must accept this event history as a once in a lifetime earthquake and move on. As I drove back to the hotel to prepare for my flight to the beautiful Chiang Mai, I asked my driver. "I Chiang Mai heard that is spectacular, what you like best Chiang Mai and Phuket. "Thai culture occupied a prominent place in his response:" Well, "he replied, Chiang Mai has the mountains --- but we're lucky. We have the sea. "

Many hotels rebuilt in the area are offering discounts not return to see how consumers, if ever. There is no better time to come to this great country, both for our own enjoyment, and to be part of the healing process. Like say Thais, "Rub-ton Yin-dee-Kruber-ma" - simply said, "Welcome back."
