Madison ranks No. 1 in insurance for children

More than four fifths of children in the state capital of Wisconsin is covered by private health insurance, the best percentage among the nation's largest 100 metropolitan areas.

Only 17.9 percent of children in Madison not covered by private health insurance policies, according to an analysis of Business First of Buffalo of the new U.S. Census data Bureau.

Estimates office of the Madison area has 123 700 people under 18. Private insurers covering 101 600, leaving 22 100 under a government program of insurance or without health insurance of any kind.

Madison is right behind Honolulu, where only 18.4 percent of children are not under the umbrella of health private insurance, Ogden, Utah, at 19.4 percent, and Minneapolis-St. Paul at 19.9 percent in the open. Milwaukee was 38th among the largest metropolitan areas with a 29.4 percent of children not covered by private insurance.

Two meters of Texas on the Mexican border have the worst rates in the country. More than three quarters parts of the McAllen-Edinburg children - 77.0 percent - are not covered by private health insurance. The corresponding figure in the area of El Paso is 63.5 percent.

Buffalo ranks 39th among the top 100 markets, with 29.7 percent of children not covered by private insurers. (The Buffalo area is composed of the counties Erie and Niagara.) The median for the study group was 31.3 percent in the open.

Business First analyzed recent data from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, statistics generated during the year between the number of head office in ten years.
