Safety and first aid on the beach
Going to the beach is always fun. It does not matter what the weather (except perhaps a hurricane), the sound of the waves, fresh air and spectacular views always worth the trip. But it is always a good idea to carry some basic items first aid if you have more of an adventure than you planned. You also need to be aware of potential hazards and precautions.
The first thing to consider is the effect of heat and sun. Even on a cloudy and cool you can still get a good sunburn. Wearing a hat and light clothing is a good idea for long stays. The application of a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or higher to all exposed areas will also help. Always wear soft drinks, water is best, and drink often to avoid dehydration and sunstroke. The sugar and caffeine drinks are not a substitute for water.
Know Flag Beach local system. Most public beaches flags of different colors to designate the current conditions of air, climate and water quality. These are the common colors and what they represent:
Orange - Air and water quality is poor.
Blue - dangerous marine life is present or has been spotted (jellyfish, sharks, rays, etc)
Red - Strong waves and currents present, stay out of deep water (more than the waist).
Yellow - Some strong waves and currents, caution is advised.
Green - Fair conditions and the calm water.
If you go in the water, never swim alone. If possible, Always swim when lifeguards are on duty. Use some sort of beach or water shoes for protection against metal, glass or other dangerous items on the beach or in water. Both man-made reservoirs and natural elements can have sharp edges and cause problems. Make sure you have a good disinfectant (alcohol swaps do), a little water for cleaning the area, and some form of strips or covers to protect against any possible contamination. If bleeding is difficult to stop or cut is deep, seek immediate medical attention.
Never underestimate the water conditions, currents and waves. Waves and surprising undercurrent anyone, especially the young and the elderly.
Swimming in the sea is not like a swimming pool. Always take some sort of coast guard approved flotation devices along just in case. A swimmer in trouble may be difficult to panic and to save even for the more experienced swimmer. Stay calm and be aware of their limitations before trying to save someone. A flotation device quality and 15-20 feet of rope can make a big difference in case of emergency.
Another threat, when water is the possibility of dangerous marine life. Jellyfish come in many variations, some dangerous, some harmless. The Portuguese of war is dangerous and often fleet near the surface. If you see washed on the shore, is a sign that they are in the area and go in the water is not a good idea. Even when the tentacles out of water may still be able to cause pitting and toxins that will be painful. If you come into contact with a tentacle, wash the area with salt water first. Do not use vinegar, water softener meat, baking soda or alcohol. None of the help. Most bites are minor stop hurting in 15-20 minutes with little or no treatment other than washing with salt water clean. If any difficulty breathing or changes in consciousness, it is possible allergic reaction the reaction that is occurring and should be treated as an emergency serious medical. Benadryl is good to have along and can greatly reduce the allergic reaction, but medical treatment may still be justified. It really depends the number of areas that contacted the tentacles and the individual's resistance to toxins. If in doubt, seek medical attention immediately. If a itching or a rash develops after the bite, a hydrocortisone cream applied 3-4 times a day and stop soothe any itching.
Most others like the moon jellyfish or cabbage are harmless, but can still be a good idea to stay out of the water in case. Or down the beach area until you see evidence of any jellyfish. other marine species such as sharks and rays may not be visible but present. Always be alert to any activity in the surf and if in doubt, stay out of water.
Other potential threats include beach snakes, crabs (you will be amazed at the amount of pressure that these little creatures have when pinched) and insects of all kinds. If there is a constant breeze, flying insects will not be a problem, but there may still be ants (especially in the south fireants) and other crawling insects that can cause problems.
It never hurts to buy or make a small first aid kit containing the above elements and take on any beach trip. Most times you never need it but when it does you'll be glad to have it. The flotation device and cable are also important. Some sort of beach umbrella shaded area out of the sun, SPF 15 sunscreen lotion will help keep you from getting burned by the sun and beach shoes, will protect cuts and scrapes.
A little attention to local weather and water conditions, swimming in the beaches monitored, and pay attention in general is always a good idea on any trip to the beach. It never hurts to be prepared for every possible problem and can ensure a safe and fun trip.
