Painting lawn chairs, corrected too dark wood stain

P. I have some nice white plastic chairs for lawn but they get very dirty and I can not keep them clean. "I can paint them? In addition, my refrigerator has become all pockmarked with rust spots. Is finished orange peel, so I can not sand the spots. Is there any practical way to paint?
BARBARA GULA, Dedham
A. For the deck chairs, sure you can paint, such as a darker color so it does not show dirt as much. Use a special spray paint for plastic called Fusion. It is made by Krylon and is sold in paint stores. As for the fridge, the rough surfaces are difficult to handle. You could try this: Wire brush to remove as much oxide points as possible. For any left reformer oxide therapy or another brand name that contains phosphoric acid which converts rust and makes black paint. Then spray with a good spray paint oil base. Think twice before, bite the bullet and have painted professionally. It's expensive, but they will do a good job.
P. stained a door and some adjustment in my house with Minwax, but when I finished to find that it was very dark. What I can do to clarify? The wood had some sort of pretreatment to the stain.
Cynthia Watkins, Durham, NH
A. You can not lighten, you must sand it all off to the bare wood. The pre-stain treatment (with a stain sealer) was done to make the spot way more evenly, and may also have reduced the amount of the stain penetrated, making sanding easier. With the bare wood showing, find a lighter stain, and put it in moderation. The way is to dip a cotton pad (made of a folded cloth) on the stain, squeeze it and wipe up the stain. Is neglected (use gloves), but this allows you to control the amount of stains that occur. Click a small area before taking a step back and admire. To ensure success. Of course, beware of overlapping, the stain dries quickly and have mixing problems at the edges.
P. I have my mother's old container cutting, which she used for years. It is very hard on the inside, and save it as a souvenir table. Somehow the water got into it and made an ugly brown water stain. How I can remove?
Davina SCHUMAN, Reading
A. You could sand, but they never make such an ancient artifact. So instead of sanding, you can try to find a woodworker who could plane or gouge the stain. "Gouge" sounds pretty drastic, but a gouge is a curved chisel designed to take off thin layers of wood. One of the workers as Peter Follansbee, a friend who is a worker of the Plymouth plantation timber and not be caught dead with sandpaper. Call Peter and tell him that the other Peter (me) he proposed. To give you an idea of what Peter ago: One of the pieces of their furniture is in the Museum of Fine Arts permanent collection. That is fine when it is not dead.
Birds nesting solution
We received two dandy ideas about how to prevent birds from nesting on a ledge under a window air conditioner. The handyman suggested tacking wire cloth (steel mesh) under the unit to keep the birds.
This is what Susan said in an e-mail: "My mother is 85 years old, Mary, you solution occurred 15 years ago. He crunched aluminum foil on the threshold, the shiny side up. The birds do not like the texture or brightness. No nests in last 15 years! Cheap fix. "
From MBR of Arlington: "Birds around my window air conditionersdrove me crazy last summer, and I found a pile of poop when I took them out in the fall. But I found a solution that sounds much easier than the steel mesh you suggested. I have some peaks of birds in my local hardware, intended to keep pigeons from perching on the windows. It was fairly easy to assemble and along the sides when I put air conditioners in May and have worked well. I wanted metal, but finished with a plastic that can be easily recorded to air conditioning or insured by other media. Probably just slotting one or two below solve the problem. "
