The Queen of Green Green deflates hype introduced today and put to dry Greenwash

Q: Debra, I found your book to be intelligent, stimulating and full of information helpful. It made me feel good about my own efforts to go green. Tell us what your book.

R: Everyday I am in contact with people who want live green ... what they really want to do right. In talking with them, I realized that most people do not know the basics of green. The most common question I am asked is "How I can know if this product is really green?"

My book, very green, is the answer to this question. It covers all aspects basic that anyone needs to know to tell the difference between products with the environment and the real health benefits and those with misleading green advertising. It covers everything from the definition of biodegradable way to identify green washing. But more importantly, outlines the basic principles that define green products by so anyone can have confidence that you can recognize a green product when they see it.

Q: So, tell the world what "green" really means?

A: In the broadest sense, green includes any product, service or activity that supports life, both human and otherwise. So this would include everything from helping the environment on human health and social issues. "Green" is the umbrella that encompasses everything in these areas, including organic, recycled, biodegradable trade, fair, and other practices that sustain life.

Q: Is there a standard by which we measure what is really green?

Yes, and not based on opinion. All we need do is look at nature to see that a green product would take the resources that are rapidly renewable taken sustainably, made with efficient use of resources, and other practical guidelines. There can be no true and solid base of what constitutes a product green.

Q: What excited me most about his book was to learn that I am not what they call a "consumer." How can we become more human and less on consumer life has taught us to be?

A: Our identity of consumers to have our whole life revolves around buying things is simply not our natural state. We do not have to buy our lives, we can live our lives. Consumers depend on others to provide for them, but as human beings can think for ourselves, we feel for ourselves, create for ourselves, and act to care for the welfare of a lifetime.

Q: And with every year you've been in business, why did you choose to write this book now?

A: All of a sudden I felt a new urgency ... We all have to go to the right green now! This past winter I spent some time in San Francisco. Surprisingly, in December, the camellias were blooming, fruit trees in bloom, and the fields were yellow with mustard flowers. I was shocked! None of these things are supposed to happen until February. I lived in Northern California for 47 years and I know that when the flowers bloom. The earth is changing.

This is more than a book for me is a mission. I feel called to do this at the level depths of my being. The Earth is calling all of us.
